Tripping the light fantastic, Visible-light communication

A recent article in The Economist highlighted one of the new gadgets unveiled at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas - a pair of smartphones able to exchange data using light. These phones, as yet only prototypes from Casio, a Japanese firm, transmit digital signals by varying the intensity of the light given off from their screens. Sagentia's Euan Morrison, Head of Advanced Optics & Lighting, comments on this technology and the advancements in this area.

Why we need smart meters

Investment in infrastructure is always expensive. The installation of smart meters in every home in Britain is expected to cost £350 per home, for a total cost to the UK economy of £11bn. The government estimates the value to the country at £18bn over a 20 year period, from a combination of energy savings, avoided infrastructure, and reduced running costs. But the high cost of the rollout is being questioned.

PathoGenetix and Sagentia to develop commercial scale rapid microbial detection system

Sagentia, an international technology and product development company, announced today that it has been selected by PathoGenetix to develop a commercial scale system for rapid microbial detection and strain typing based on PathoGenetix’s Genome Sequence Scanning Technology (GSS). The system is being designed to capitalize on the broad range of potential GSS applications that span microbial genomics research, food and product safety, and clinical infectious disease testing.

New drugs developed in the laboratory can often use processes which require the use of non-standard equipment or unusual environmental conditions. This trend is being driven by both market cost pressures and the need for pharmaceutical companies to find ways to address aging drug portfolios.
