Patient care

The patient care sector, perhaps more than other areas of the healthcare industry, is facing a dramatic period of change. The drive towards more cost effective and efficient healthcare provision is forcing device manufacturers to provide products which not only optimise patient outcomes but also provide greater value.

Sagentia helps companies develop transformational medical technology that help to shape a new age of patient care. We specifically work with companies to develop products that treat acute and chronic conditions within the hospital, emergency, home or specialist environments. This includes medical devices in the areas of critical care, patient monitoring, alternate care and drug delivery.

Sagentia’s work can often start with front end innovation workshops that help identify next generation transformational patient care devices. Most of our work revolves around the application of science and technology expertise to help address fundamental health issues. Our core capability lies in the development of complex physical devices that are both clinically and cost effective, from concept design through to prototype and transfer to manufacture.

For many companies, particularly those facing competition from low-cost countries, the answer does not lie in entering price wars.  The answer, for sustainable growth, is to add intelligence and valuable functionality to products, to broaden into a service offering or to gain a foothold in the new, growing markets of telemedicine and the emerging economies.

Our work at the cutting edge of science and technology allows us to identify emerging technologies and contextualise and quantify their potential disruption to your market.

We also specialise in working with our customers to achieve key cost reductions across the product development lifecycle, from technology options through to the sourcing of low-cost quality manufacturing.

Recent examples of project work for clients operating in the patient care sector include:

  • The world’s first monitoring system to transmit complex implantable cardiovascular defibrillator (ICD) data between patient and clinician. Sagentia co-developed the transmitter, from initial specification through to transfer to manufacture, providing expertise in the selection of low-cost products, consumer product design and electronics and software development.
  • An award-winning breakthrough product that removes excess fluid from the blood of congestive heart failure patients. The unit continuously withdraws blood from the patient, controls fluid filtration rate and returns treated blood back again. Sagentia’s mechanical, electronics and software engineers devised a working prototype within nine months which addressed the need for extensive safety monitoring and fault tolerance.
  • Sensohaler is an exciting new technology that monitors key performance characteristics of an inhaler, providing valuable feedback to the user, clinician, doctor or provider, consequently promoting correct use.
  • Screening of newborn children for hearing loss is now mandatory in many states in the USA. We worked with SonaMed to develop one of the first, and subsequently the most highly regarded, systems on the market by developing the interface between patient and PC for its Clarity System.
  • Photocure develops and sells pharmaceuticals and medical devices based on proprietary photodynamic technology, targeting key dermatology and oncology markets. The company identified the need for a new, large-area photodynamic treatment (PDT) lamp that could be used in combination with its proprietary pharmaceutical, Visonac™, for the treatment of moderate to severe facial acne. They have also produced a breakthrough light activated drug device investigated for treatment of HPV and cervical pre-cancer.
