Diagnostics

The diagnostics market is developing rapidly with the emergence of new and sophisticated technologies, including molecular diagnostics and novel imaging techniques. Companies will need to embrace these new technologies and develop innovative marketing and development strategies if they wish to gain competitive advantage.

Molecular diagnostics

Over the past ten years the field of molecular diagnostics has emerged with a diverse spectrum of innovative tools for effective prediction, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Traditionally a distinct industry, molecular diagnostics now also plays a central role in the discovery, development and marketing of therapeutics as well as the fundamental understanding of disease processes. This, combined with the drive toward disease prevention and wellness, will see molecular diagnostics having an increasing role in the future of integrated disease management.

Novel imaging

Medical imaging is becoming increasingly sophisticated at a time when the industry is facing growing pressure to reduce costs. Images from different modalities are being combined to improve diagnostic capability and patient outcomes. The improved screening and diagnostic capabilities of imaging systems allow diseases to be detected earlier and, while this benefits the patient, it can prove to be a significant threat to businesses whose products are primarily downstream therapeutic devices.

We have worked with a number of clients in these areas to provide them with a full understanding of the diagnostics sector and to help them develop effective strategies to safeguard their businesses. For example:

  • work for a major medical company highlighted how molecular approaches could disrupt its business over a ten year timescale. We analysed 9 core disease states and determined the impact and likelihood of emerging diagnostic technologies
  • for a major medical diagnostics company, we carried out a strategic analysis of their large and diverse patent portfolio. The outcome was an IP management tool, cost reductions and a plan for the future IP strategy
  • our client, a global medical technology business, asked us to explore the digital X-ray area to help them understand the technology landscape, competitors, and performance characteristics of different systems. Clear recommendations for partnering and acquisition opportunities emerged, establishing a position from which our client moved forward.
