Our consultancy on actuators and control systems forms a major part of our industrial sector work.

Recent examples include:

  • the optimisation and development of a solenoid valve in a hydraulic control system. Our analytical modelling approach enabled us to optimise the design for power consumption, thermal dissipation, response time and actuation force within a tightly constrained physical envelope
  • the development of a two-axis stabilisation system for a high gain optical stage. The development included precision mechanical design and a control algorithm which took into account the complex interactions between the two axes

We have a proven track record of bringing new actuator and control systems to market. These include novel linear actuators using magnetic and piezo-electric devices, magnetic bearings and brushless motors. We can also design new actuator systems for demanding applications where an off the shelf solution is not a realistic option. To do this, we have developed a team which spans a range of specialist competencies including magnetics and materials, electric motor and novel actuator design, control systems modelling, optimisation and implementation, and power conversion.
