New devices in personal care and beauty

A Sagentia white paper co-authored with Unilever.

Innovation in the personal care, health and beauty industry has traditionally been dominated by R&D in formulation chemistry and huge marketing budgets. In recent years, however, a new frontier has emerged: the area of devices. This paper outlines the device opportunity, market drivers and key enablers. This is followed by specialist perspectives on the consumer, technology and diagnostics viewpoints written by experts in each field.

Innovative personal care diagnostic device

		Dove Advanced Diagnostic Instrument (DADI)

Unilever’s Hair Care business wanted to develop a diagnostic device to support brand activation, engage consumers and encourage them to trial Dove products. Diagnostics are increasingly proven to drive consumer buy-in and for Dove, whose brand essence is built on efficacy, empirical evidence around the efficacy of products to improve hair damage carries a strong and relevant message.

Skin care visions - four personal care device concepts

Sagentia recently published (Jan 2012) a white paper that explores the opportunity for devices within the beauty and personal care markets. To accompany that paper and make real some of the themes that we believe will define the next generation of devices, we have conducted a visioning exercise to apply technology and design to known needs within the skin care category.

It is well recognised that patented intellectual property (IP) plays a crucial role in ensuring an organisation’s current and future prosperity. Not so well known are the arts of how to construct and manage a patent portfolio in light of a constantly changing external IP landscape.

Personalised medicine and companion diagnostic device development

Personalised medicine is a new field that has often been defined as ‘the right treatment for the right person at the right time’. The essence of the concept is accounting for the differences in an individual patient’s genetic profile in a way that anticipates and overcomes potential complications and adverse drug reactions. Companion diagnostics is a key attribute of personalised medicine and is the development of diagnostic tests whereby molecular assays that measure levels of proteins, genes or specific mutations are used to provide information for a therapy specific to an individual’s condition.

This article in the International Pharmaceutical Industry Journal by Sagentia's Nick Rollings discusses this topic in some detail.

Energy harvesting

A Sagentia white paper written by Jeremy Bickerstaffe.

The prospect for smart cities and smart homes means we are always on the look out for innovative power solutions. Energy fields such as heat, light and sound are all around us, so can we collect that energy and power things? This white paper defines energy harvesting and how it works, considers when energy harvesting is appropriate and looks at future applications that could be enabled by energy harvesting as the technology matures.

With Sensopad™, our teams developed an innovative, low-cost, accurate and rugged position sensing technology for application in a wide range of markets. TT Electronics, a global electronics group supplying leading manufacturers in the defence, aerospace, medical, transportation and industrial markets, recognised the potential of the Sensopad™ technology to address the automotive industry’s move towards digital, non-contact sensing. In 2004, TT Electronics acquired the rights to Sensopad™ and used its extensive market reach to successfully launch and commercialise the technology.

Development of novel manufacturing systems

Scale-up of a laboratory process to a novel manufacturing system suitable for continuous manufacture.

Taking a laboratory process and scaling it up such that it is suitable for mass production can often be a challenge, but particularly when the manufacturing must take place in the absence of oxygen. Sagentia had to create and implement some novel solutions to generate and maintain the low oxygen environment required throughout the process. The resulting pilot system was designed with continuous manufacture in mind, giving careful consideration to ensuring process uniformity for each product.

The Gen Autumn 2011

In this edition of The Gen, our first feature article explores the new trend towards device innovation in the personal care, health and beauty industry. The article discusses why this is important now and the steps to success. The second feature looks at product development for start ups and the things we need to consider as established companies increasingly rely on start-ups as their source of innovation. Elsewhere we take a specific look at the future of smart cities and how this could be enabled by energy harvesting technology.

Designing for Emerging Markets

This article by Sagentia's Dan Edwards and Geoff Waite in the Summer issue of the Innovation Journal explores the opportunities in the emerging markets. Centuries ago, the riches of the Far East held an almost mythical allure for European traders hoping to sell exotic jewels and spices in the West. Today, the riches of the East are the emerging markets of China and India (and, to a lesser extent, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, South Korea, Russia and Indonesia), where rapid economic growth and the potential for high-volume sales has once again entranced Western traders. But this time, the West is trying to sell to the East.

Functional Safety for Medical Devices

Medical devices are complex products, and patients' lives can depend on them functioning correctly. It is crucial that the risks of device failure, and the severity of the harm that could result from that failure, is minimised. Paulo Pinheiro, a senior consultant at technology development company Sagentia, suggests some ways this can be achieved in this article from the June issue of Clinica.
